9th Grade Fall Science Field Trip

October 26, 2023 @ 8:30 am - 2:00 pm

9th Grade Fall Science Field Trip
On this trip, students will do a variety of science and math-based activities to help enhance their classroom learning. We will be going to “Austin Brothers Farm” in Belchertown. We will spring students up into 4 groups. 2 will take a hay ride out to a field where they will pick their own sugar pumpkin and learn about how they are grown. One of the remaining groups will do an ecology lesson (the anatomy of a pumpkin) with one of the farm hands. The other group will go through a small corn maze and practice skills of memory and critical decision making to get to the other side. The groups will then switch so every student gets to do each of these activities. We will then eat lunch and have a presentation of FSA farm sharing; how it works and the economics of local farming vs. industrial farming and WHY it is important to pay attention to where food is grown. After lunch, students will Conduct a short math lab where they will measure their pumpkins, weigh them, and fill out a selection of different, real world math algebra problems to help them better understand what these equations look like in reality, not just on paper.
