The CMP Expedition was a great success on Friday, May 10th! Mr. Lewis’s and Mrs. Colon’s after school groups traveled to Northampton to explore the Smith College campus. First the students experienced the Smith College Botanical Garden a Victorian era greenhouse with multiple rooms and hundreds of different plant species. Next they immersed themselves in an art exhibit at the Smith College Art Museum “Plastic Entanglements” representing the environmental complications due to plastic over use on our planet. They stopped for a sweet treat at Herrell’s Ice Cream Shoppe. They traveled across town to Safe Passage a non profit organization that aids victims of violence. The groups raised $200 to donate in $10 gift cards to be given directly to the clients of Safe Passage for immediate assistance. The students met with the director in their conference room and were given information on the message and goals of Safe Passage. The director commented on the insightful questions the students were asking. After visiting Safe Passage the group brought a care package and hand written Thank You cards as a celebration of “First Responders Week” to the Northampton Fire Station. The students took a tour of the station, were given detailed explanation of the procedures of emergency response, they were allowed to sit in the fire truck and slide down the fire pole! The group asked more excellent questions and the firemen were appreciative of their donation. The group ate dinner at Local Burger then took a walk through downtown Northampton enjoying the shops. The trip ended with a well received street performance by the HCSS Step Team in Pulaski Park. Overall the trip was a great success and the students had a wonderful experience completing their CMP requirements.
